In keeping with my goal of updating more frequently, I'm actually posting the new items I've found! Hooray!

Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

Neko Case I've covered before so you know that she's the queen of alterna-country and basically incredible. This is her newest album (It came out a few months ago but her albums always come out in vinyl late) and while not as good as Blacklisted, it is still good. Give it a listen. This album also continues a nice trend of including a coupon for a free digital download. So your ipod can be happy too!

The Beatles - Beatles For Sale

This was a happy bonus from ordering the mono White Album I'll talk about below. When I opened the package there was a note from the seller telling me he was including this free. It's not mint, but it's easily VG+ and it's a first pressing. Glory be to ebay. No need to discuss the album, it's The Beatles, you know it.

Sara Watkins - Sara Watkins

This I bought without being a fan of Nickle Creek. I saw Sara play live with Fiction Family and she played the song "Long Hot Summer Day" and it was amazing. The rest of the album is a country throwback with lots of fiddle. It's good but twangy so if that's not your thing then stay away. However, everyone should check out "Long Hot Summer Day," it's great.

The Surfers - On The Rocks

I collect Surf Lp's and had never heard of this but it had a cool cover. It's all Hawiian music and it's nice but not really my thing. Maybe if I have a Hawiian BBQ or something.

The Beatles -Sgt Peppers

No Idea why I bought this. It's in great shape but it's not a 1st pressing. Stupid. It has the inserts though. Anyone want to buy it off me?

Elvis Presley - The Real Elvis

I love EP's and I like early Elvis music (his later stuff sucks). This is in great shape with a picture sleeve. Tiny little 4 song albums, so cool!

The Beatles - The Beatles

The best find of the week. This is a UK White Album. Which is awesome by itself. But, this one is also Mono! In the US Mono had been fazed out by this time on Beatles records (making Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt Peppers quite valuable in mono). In the UK this and Yellow Submarine were issued in Mono (while Let it Be and Abbey Road were not). This is a pretty valuable record. It features some unique mixes of some songs (no false ending in Helter Skelter, no hand claps in Ob-la-di Ob-la-da, etc.) and is really fun to listen to. I've seen CD's of this going for way too much on Ebay and the records go for even more. So if you ever see it pick it up. It's a great item for hardcore Beatles fans.

Random Catch Up

I've gotten way too many things to play complete catch up on right now. I'm sorry. I've been too darn lazy. So anyway what you see above is what I've gotten in the last 3 days. And I'm just going to list some of the notable things acquired recently. I'll try to be better. Forgive me.

The Beatles - The Complete Mobile Fidelity Collection - Mint audiophile vinyl set. I just wish I had the guts to play these!

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet - Mint German Decca 1st pressing. Where did those stars on the left come from? They aren't on my US or UK pressings.

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - For what should be a fairly common album it took me until today to ever see a first pressing Mono of this. I have had the Stereo version and a 180g reissue. It was starting to get to me. But here she is!

The Beatles - MFSL White Album - The solo issue of the Mobile Fidelity White Album. I have listened to this one. Awesome.

The Beatles - MFSL Magical Mystery Tour - Same as above. So nice.

The Sonics - Here Are The Sonics - Actually found 4 of these. 2 1st press Stereo. 2 first press Mono. Anyone want to buy one?

The Beatles - Yesterday and Today - More butcher covers. 2nd state stereo. 3rd state stereo. 3rd state mono. I'm obsessed.

Then there are tons of randoms. Lots of surf (Dracula's Deuce NM Stereo, 2 first press Downey LPS!) lots more Beatles (Mono Peppers, Mono UK White Album, Introducing The Beatles Stereo, Two Virgins 1st Press UK and US, etc), Yardbirds, Youngbloods, Who, Kinks, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, etc. etc. Lets just say the collection has grown. Anyway, I will try to be more regular from now on and try to get some more sound files up. So stay tuned!

Best Vinyl of 2008

This is a bit different than the usual posts about the vinyl I find. I've decided it might be fun to figure out what the best vinyl album of each year was and put it up. So I'm going to start at 2008 and work my way back in time (No 2009 yet because there is still half a year left). Lets see what I have first. Remember, I'm only going to put an album on this if it's on vinyl. This is the best vinyl of each year.

2008

2008 wasn't the greatest year of all time in music. Sure some of my favorite bands put out records (AC/DC, Weezer, The Presidents of the USA, etc.) but all in all I could only find a handful of albums I'd want to listen to at all, let alone buy on vinyl. However, the band I consider to be the best currently recording group in music right now, did put out an album.

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely

This is one of my favorite albums period. I love the classic rock sound that Jack White and Co manage to lay down (which makes sense hearing The White Stripes and Greenhornes albums that came from these members). Seeing them live just cements their status. All of the tracks are great but the real winners are the ones featuring Jack White. "Top Yourself" is a great bluesy tune that really kicks into gear midway, "Carolina Drama" is a great country/blues/folk tune that tells an interesting story, and "These Stones Will Shout" has a lovely melody that builds into a furiously wonderful ending. Check it out. It's amazing.

Also Available:

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend - This was the next best thing in 2008 and probably would have won some other years. The critics love these guys which usually kills a band for me, but they're too good. This has a very nice Paul Simon feel to it and is definitely worth owning. I just hope the follow up can live up to the expectations created by the debut.

Matt Costa - Unfamiliar Faces - Ok I'm kind of a sucker for this type of music sometimes and I saw him live before I had ever heard of him and he impressed me with his simplicity. It's a nice album. If you're a guy you could use it to get a girl. If you're a girl you could listen to it and be girly. Either way I'm not that emberassed to admit I enjoy it.

Jakob Dylan - Seeing Things - I saw The Wallflowers live in Spokane one year and they impressed the hell out of me by doing an encore of only classic rock covers. From then on Jakob Dylan gets the benefit of the doubt in my book. This album is softer than The Wallflowers but still has his raspy gravely voice. Not too bad, not too great.

Weezer - Weezer (The Red Album) - Ok I'll admit that the first time through this I was pissed off. Why? Rivers raps. The lyrics suck. "Heart Songs." But it is still Weezer and I love them. "Troublemaker" has dumb lyrics but it's a catchy tune. Same goes for "Pork and Beans." "The Greatest Man That Ever Lived" is so odd that you can't help but enjoy it. Anyway it's the worst Weezer album yet but still maybe worth checking out because come on, it's Weezer!

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue - While not near as good as her solo self-titled debut, this is still a pretty cool album. Taking a but more of her rock influence this time around to go with her country twang she manages to belt out some enjoyable tunes. But find the debut first.

The Fleetwoods - Mr Blue

I'll admit right away that I haven't listened to this album yet. I bought it because when reading about a Wailers and Ventures show they mentioned The Fleetwoods and their hit "Come Softly to Me." Being infinitely interested in Northwest music I searched out the single. It's a great song. So soft, so professional, so sweet. It's nothing like the garage rock that most people associate with the Seattle music scene. So with the 2 hit singles in hand I began to look for the LP. Today i found it and after cleaning it am playing it as we speak. It's very good so far. So hop on youtube and search for "Come Softly to Me" and "Mr. Blue." They are great. Then go buy the CD or better yet, the LP!

Positive or Negative?

This is a different post than most. I've been thinking about my recent postings of rare or hard to find LP's and 45's. Does this practice harm the artists? Does it help promote their music? Is it the same as Bit Torrent, Napster and all the other file sharing going on across the net or is it more akin to playing a single on the radio? It's a tough call. I will admit, I used to acquire a lot of music from less than legitimate sources. I used to say it was ok because I would still buy the music that I really wanted and only download the stuff I probably would never buy anyway. But this was just a way to make myself feel better. The truth is, it was always stealing. So is this the same thing? Should i take all the music off? My rationale for keeping it is that I am trying to promote music that is no longer being purchased by anyone but the most devoted collectors. I posted the Dale Hawkins album because it is a 1000 dollar record. I don't know that many people that can afford that one. Yet, it is available on CD (with bonus tracks). Am I hurting the artist by doing this or am I turning more people on to his music and hopefully pushing them into buying other albums by the artist? I don't know. I made sure not to post any music from more modern readily available artists like the White Stripes or Pearl Jam. I also wouldn't dream of posting a commercially available Beatles, Stones, Kinks or Who track. So that's something. I feel better about posting rare or osbscure 45's and maybe I'll just do that from now on. In my mind these push the listener to go out and find more. They don't get the whole album (and believe me with the Sonics and the Wailers the rest is great), and thus will want to find more. So what is the answer? Should I stop? Should I continue? Am I making a mountain out of a mole hill? If you have any thoughs put them in the comments below. Rockin' Robin Roberts - Louie, Louie

This is basically a Wailers record but is credited to Rockin' Robin Roberts. Either way it's great and it's the song that launched a 1000 garage bands (when it was covered complete with "Alright lets give it to em right now!" solo intro by Portland's the Kingsmen). Enjoy.

Record Stores Are Fun For Everyone!!

I keep reading everywhere that vinyl is making a come back. More and more people are turning to records because of the sound quality and the cool cover art. I feel a bit torn about this. On one hand it's great that the music industry can find a medium to make some more money (downloading or more accurately "stealing" is killing the industry) and I'm happy that this means that more record stores will pop up, but on the other hand it means more competition. Oh well, more competition means better product right? Either way as another example of how great record stores are and how great vinyl is, my good buddy Angeline and I hit a few on the Ave today and had a grand old time (as seen by Angeline modeling the newest Jenny Lewis LP). So even non record kids can enjoy a record store.

The Sonics!

Wow that was a long time between posts. Sorry about that I hope it will not be a regular occurrence. I had a foul up with my computer and my camera but now I'm back! I've gotten way too many great things to put up in one post so I'm just going to try and hit some highlights. I've been getting some singles lately and I figured a nice way to come back is this gem.

Boss Hoss/The Hustler

The Sonics are one of the coolest bands ever in my opinion. With basically only 2 albums (I don't count Introducing The Sonics as even they themselves called it garbage) of material they left an amazing legacy. They are loud nasty and wonderful. Enjoy the A-Side off their first release and the non-album track on the B-Side. Great stuff.

Dale Hawkins - Oh! Suzy - Q

This will be the first of what I hope will be many posts featuring complete albums or at least songs for you all to listen to. This is a great album, and a pretty rare and valuable album. I've actually had 2 of these at various times but sold one for a pretty penny and kept one for myself. Alot of you are probably familiar with the title song as either done by CCR or even by The Rolling Stones. This one is the original and it kicks. The rest of the album is more of the same. Great early rock and roll guitar that should make his fellow chess label mates Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley proud. Apparently the Chess brothers were considering putting this on their Argo subsidiery which is apparent by the back cover which has an Argo label number. Either way they changed their minds and although this didn't get a big pressing, it is amazing. So, sit back and enjoy this rare LP and an artist who probably deserved more.

Into the Wild

I'm not going to review this album because the last time I listened to it I didn't like it. I'm going to listen to it again so if I end up liking it now I'll update this post. I will however say that I never should have been buying this album this late in the game. When this album first came out I actually happened to walk into Easy Street just browsing and had it in my hand because there was a sign saying "Limited Pressing One to a Customer" and it was Pearl Jam's front man. So I was going to buy it for 20 bucks and then thought "Why buy this, I don't like it!" So I put it back. Later the same day I realized it was going for 300 bucks on ebay and went back to the store. Too late. So this has plagued my mind every time I go to a record store. Not anymore! Sonic Boom had it still sealed (for more than 20 but tons less than 300). So I am now complete.

Outburst!

I love this album. It's 2nd only to "Wailers Wailers Everywhere!" as my favorite Wailers album. This is in their harder more rocking days and even though the first track begins like a Monkees song I promise the album is outstanding. I've always thought that The Wailers had really unique and interesting harmonies and you can see those here on the quieter tracks like "Think Kindly Baby." The standout rocker is the title track to their previous album "Out of Our Tree." United Artists must have wanted in on that as this was their first album on the new label. I really love the song "Hold" and it's psych-rock sound. Good stuff. This is the more valuable stereo pressing of the album to go along with the mono copy I already have. 2 more to go and I've got them all!

I'm not going to write much about this album because I also got the Delux Edition that has this and much more and that will get its own seperate post. I had to get this as well because the cover is different than what I already have. I'm ridiculous. Awesome album features the mastered for vinyl by Bob Ludgwig audiophile pressing! Also includes a new mix of the album by their current producer that is really quite good. More in that post.

Magical Mystery Tour

The coolest EP ever. This is the British version of the "Magical Mystery Tour" album or rather the American "Magical Mystery Tour" is our version of this British EP. When Parlophone offered Capitol this EP, they were sick of putting out EP's because nobody was buying them. So, they took this EP and added a series of singles to create the "Magical Mystery Tour" LP. The British version however is just side 1. It has two 45 rpm discs in it and a lyric book like we see in the LP. It's really a cool little package and even though I already had one, this was too cheap to pass up.

Elvis! Car Rock! Stripes! Hillbillies!

It's hard to keep up with reviewing these albums! Some of these I may not talk too much about just to catch up. I'm also going to be throwing some vinyl rips on of some albums that I've gotten in the past that are worthy of a listen. So look for that. Anyway these albums are from Neptune Music on 45th and Brooklyn. I'm thinking of also doing some reviews of record stores as well so maybe I'll do that. This one I visit alot so it will definitely get a review.

Not my favorite Elvis album but this is an early effort and it is a first press. I wouldn't say that there are any big hits on this album and all in all it feels a bit disjointed. Not really a rocker and not really full of his better ballads. There are better.

Big Hot Rod

This is a silly album. Typical of most of the crown releases this is some pretty generic surf rock. I enjoy the good surf rock of the 60's like The Impacts, Dick Dale, and The Ventures. but this was one I couldn't get myself to finish. After side 1 it was to the shelf for good for this one. Cool cover though.

Muswell Hillbillies

This is the best album of the bunch. The last good Kinks album in my opinion. As I've mentioned before I think The Kinks are supremely underrated. From their first album, that I reviewed in the first post on this blog, to this one they were awesome. This continues on the transformation from pure rock and roll to folksy/country flavored ballads with the typical Davies lyrics and melodies. Great stuff. "20th Century Man" is awesome. "Complicated Life," "Alcohol," Muswell Hillbilly" all are great tracks as well. Definitely check it out. The problem with this release is the vinyl. The first pressing of Muswell is on RCA's new "crappy flexible disc" vinyl. It's supposed to resist warping blah blah blah. It's just supremely thin and you feel ripped off buying it. I had forgotten about it until I picked this up. I may go and buy a 180 gram re-release to listen to and put this one away. Awesome album, 1st press not the best. Stupid RCA.

Greatest Rock and Roll

Watched Korea destroy Venezuela tonight at the WBC but earlier today I picked up The Greatest Rock and Roll Atlantic 8001 which is a pretty great sampler of early Atlantic rock and roll. More when I get back.

White Stripes! Pearl Jam with Neil Young!

Down in Los Angeles watching baseball this weekend but I did manage to find 2 great records down here at Amoeba which for as big as it is, is pretty picked through. They did have some MFSL Beatles albums i may regret not getting but nothing else really leapt out at me. Anyway I'll update this post and the last few when I get back. Go Team USA!

Mirror Ball

This is a pretty cool album that I'm a bit disappointed in myself for passing up for so long. I remember when this album came out back in 1995 and at the time I LOVED Pearl Jam (still do when they aren't being political). I didn't get really into Neil Young until fairly recently so back then I just bought the companion Merkin Ball which is basically a Pearl Jam single that Neil played on (it's definately worth a listen). This album substitutes Pearl Jam for Crazy Horse and is muddy, raw, and wonderful. The album was basically recorded live and it shows. It feels like somebody rolled tape on a jam session and this is the result. Pearl Jam is energetic and raw behind Neil's strong vocals. The album doesn't really break new ground for either performer but since Neil is considered the granddaddy of grunge and Pearl Jam perhaps the most successful artist to come out of the Seattle grunge scene, they mesh very well. The first track "Song X" sets the tone of muddy distorted guitars and chanted background vocals and is a great rocker. "Downtown" is also a great track. All in all something to consider if you're a fan of either of these artists. I will say that I hate the packaging. If you're going to have a double vinyl record, have space to put both records. A standard one opening jacket just doesn't cut it.

Elephant

I'll start off by saying I'm a huge Jack White fan. The Raconteurs are one of my favorite bands and he just has such a classic rock vibe to him, it's awesome. The White Stripes are obviously his more well known band with ex-wife Meg White. Everytime I listen to this album I can't imagine 2 people performing it live. I'd kill to see a White Stripes show. Anyway, this is my favorite Stripes album. It just feels more complete and less haphazard then the others and it has some awesome tracks. The whole album is great yet, the songs that really jump out at you are the songs that begin each side. "Seven Nation Army" is probably the most radio played song on the entire album and it deserves it, it's great. Yet, the best song on it is "Ball and Biscuit." This is straight up classic rock up there with Zeppelin, The Who, The Yardbirds and any other band hell bent on playing blues songs with harder more pounding riffs. I love it. If you've never heard it go buy this and skip side one and go right for side 2. You'll thank me. This album is also pretty cool because of the colored vinyl (which I took a picture of above, yes I own 2 of these) that features one white disc and one red disc. Later versions are pressed on normal black vinyl so be aware.

UK Yardbirds! UK Who! Challengers Promo!

Again I'm going to blow through these albums, which is a shame because they kind of deserve more words. Either way here goes.

The Yardbirds (Roger The Engineer)

This is the album that deserves the most words. It's for one of the most overlooked bands of its age. The Yardbirds featured some of the best guitarists of all time (just not at the same time). Eric Clapton was the man for their first album but left after he felt they were going too commercial and weren't true to their blues roots (too bad he couldn't see himself doing "Change the World" with babyface, yuck). Then he was followed up by Jeff Beck (featured on this album) and later Jimmy Page was at the helm (forming The New Yardbirds to finish off the tour commitments and then renaming them Led Zeppelin). This album has some absolute winners on it. "Over Under Sideways Down" is a classic (and the name of the American version of this album). "Jeff's Boogie" is a rocker and "I Can't Make Your Way" is catchy and my favorite. I really loved listening to this album on vinyl as my copy is incredibly clean and i'd never seen a British Columbia label. It's alot like the Parlophone lable of The Beatles British albums but the Columbia is in blue. EMI must have been a monster. Either way check this out.

Tommy

Another good album and another British find for me. I own the US version on Decca and now this one. Ugly labels on this one, not near as cool as The Yardbirds album. Another cool thing about British Albums is the glossy covers. They just look nicer than American issues (althougn more flimsy cardboard is used). I'm not the best person to talk about this album. It's good but it isn't my favorite Who album. The rock opera is a cool idea but it's basically waiding through kinda annoying songs for the great ones. Either way you've heard it so you don't need my opinion. It's good and I like the idea, I just don't love it like some people do.

Wipe Out!

This is another cool instrumental album. Not as good as The Impact's album of the same name but still nice. It feels a bit cleaner than most and I don't really know the history of this band to check out if it's a group of studio musiscians or not. Either way it's a nice surf record released towards the end of the surf era and it's a white label promo that isn't in my book. So that's cool.

The Three Greatest Groups Ever?

Went to Aladdin's for lunch with some friends today and stopped in at 2nd time around. Great idea. Came away with this stuff for less than 5 bucks.

This is one of the stone's early albums. Full of early Rock and R&B covers. Only 3 of the 12 songs are written by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Unfortunately none of those 3 are hits. 2 songs off of this album however are. "Time is On My Side" and "It's All Over Now" are great songs and are hits for good reason although the rest of the album deserves a listen as well. The best thing about this album for me was the fact that it was a first pressing. I have had a real hard time coming across early first pressing Stones albums. The originals feature the London logo followed by "ffrr" for "Full Frequency Range Recording" and on the mono maroon label. For some reason I never see them. Anyway, this one is an "ffrr" Stones album. I was giddy. The cover is slaughtered but I know a guy who has a mono cover and no record that he'll probably give me so I should be in good shape. Good album, way cooler edition.

Introducing the Beatles

The first American Beatles album. Also probably the most pirated album ever (especially the Stereo edition). This is basically an American Please, Please, Me that VeeJay records happily issued after Capital turned down the rights to The Beatles in America (which they quickly reaquired when the mania occured). Great early rock and roll album that everyone has probably heard before. If you haven't check it out. I don't feel the need to review Beatles albums since everyone knows they are outstanding. I had never seen this record in the non-pirated form until a month or so ago. Now I have 5 of them. This purchase had a cracked record and cost me 9 cents. Before anyone asks why I bought a cracked record, I have a legitimate record that at the time had no cover. Now it does. So the cracked record is pinned to the wall.

The second Zeppelin album (obviously). This is a great album and would be worthy of purchase regardless of the pressing. This pressing, however, is special. The very first pressings of II were mastered for vinyl by Bob Ludwig (who also did the mastering for the latest Pearl Jam re-release of Ten). Well Mr. Ludwig's mix was very loud and very awesome. Too awesome for the stereo setups of the 1970's. The mix caused stereo speakers to pop and crack and people assumed that the record was the problem so they returned them. Not wanting to lose out on sales Atlantic quickly mastered it down again and put it out again. The new mix is the one that has been used ever since. The original mix is louder and fuller. The drums kick harder and the guitars are raw and loud. Yet, amazingly Plant's powerful vocals are clear and up front not getting lost in the mix. It's like hearing it all over again. The way this is identified is by finding a tiny "RL" etched into the dead wax on both sides. Most record shops don't know about this and thus, don't price these up or call attention to them. So always look. Great mix of a great album.

Picked these up at Neptune Music. 4 good albums that I'm unfortunately not going to spend too much time on. Just didn't want to leave this post naked and lonely.

Tall Cool One

This is another early Wailers album that features the Tacoma groups brand of instrumental and frat rock. I love this band. They have 2 distinct eras, the pre-Beatles era and the post-Beatles era and both are great but I prefer the later stuff. This is the Stereo pressing and puts me 1 album closer to having every album. I'm so close.

Toys in the Attic

The best Aerosmith album? Before they were the band of the 80's they actually were a pretty rad classic rock band. This one features "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion."

One more early Wailers album. This is alot like the one listed above. It features almost all of the same tracks with a few substitutions. Great album. Mono only. I own too many of these now though. Time to make some money selling some.

Let it Bleed

One of my favorite Stones albums. I love this record. The first time I heard it was at a band practice when my fellow guitar player Mr. Bill Krel's spoke of it's amazingness. Not having heard the album at the time practice was put on hold as we went upstairs to listen. Blown away. This is absolutely recommended for anyone who doesn't have it. Buy it. Play it all the way through. Then, play it through again. The 1st pressings came with a poster so make sure to look for that when buying this LP.

I happened to be passing Easy Street Records and decided to see if the new Neko Case album was out on vinyl yet (it is not until the 24th of March). While I did not find the new Neko Case album I did find an import The Tigers Have Spoken and a The Beatles Second Album in shrink!!!

The Tigers Have Spoken

This is basically a live album taken from various tour dates in 2004 and includes guest musicians The Sadies, Carolyn Mark, Kelly Hogan and Jon Rauhouse. If you've never listened to Neko Case then you really owe it to yourself to check her out. She's got an amazingly distinct voice and as a solo artist (apart from the sometimes wonderful New Pornographers) she is at the forefront of alterna-country and is all around fantastic. I'll be upfront and say that I don't usually go for Live albums or albums where an artist I like alot features artists I've never heard of. Thankfully, this album is better than most. Case shines and the band is tight. The guest musicians don't overshadow her work and if they weren't mentioned you'd hardly know they were there. The album has alot of pep to it compared to some of her studio efforts. The lead off track on side 2 "Loretta" is a short quick rocker that would be at home on any early 60's rock album. Case still does have her operatic soaring vocal moments on tracks like "Favorite" and the 2 tracks co credited to Case and The Sadies are also standouts. I would still recommend Blacklisted as the album to star with, but this definately made me want to see her live. It's nice to know that some artists pack the same intensity and powerful voice when playing live as they do on their records.

The Beatles Second Album

Again another Beatles album that needs no review. I already own 3 or 4 of these but this one actually had the shrink wrap on it with the original price sticker! I guess records used to cost $2.27. Unreal. I would kill for that. Either way this is a great album. If you haven't heard it check it out. Starts out with Roll Over Beethoven and never lets up. Some people consider this the Beatles only true Rock and Roll album.

Portland 3-14-09

Headed down to Portland this weekend for some engagement ring shopping and ended up finding some record stores to shop at as well (I'm pretending I didn't know they were there). So as you can see above I came away with 5 albums.

Beatlemania! With The Beatles

This one was new for me. I'd never seen it and after looking at it and quickly realizing it was a Canadian Beatles album, I took a shot. Turns out it was the first North American Beatles album (I would have thought Introducing the Beatles was first). The front is interesting with numerous reviews of The Beatles phenomenon. Including the following:

"A new disease is sweeping through Britain...and the doctors are powerless to stop it....it's Beatlemania! This Liverpool group play to packed houses wherever they go..."

I don't know who Sandy is but she nailed it. Anyway, the album is basically just a Canadian issue of the British "With the Beatles" album with all 14 tracks included (so basically only Capital America decided to go lop off 2 tracks each album). Since everyone has heard it I won't bother going into detail reviewing it, but it is a great album.

Magical Mystery Tour

Another album that needs no review. The British EP with the singles tacked on makes for a marvelous album. Is side 2 much better than side 1 though? Maybe that's just me. Either way this was the mono press with the book inside (Mono on this one is much more rare). Awesome.

You Really Got Me

I love The Kinks. I think they're one of the most underrated bands to come out of the 60's (maybe only second to The Zombies). This is their first US album. It continues the tradition of mangling British albums to create their US counterparts. This album features 11 of the 14 tracks off the British The Kinks album. This album sounds alot like the early stuff from the Stones and The Who with that Kinks flair. So early R&B rock. Besides the title track "Bald Headed Woman," "Stop Your Sobbing," and "So Mystifying" are great tracks. I love this early stuff from these British Invasion bands. This album is great and serves as a great starter as you work your way up to gems like The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society and Muswell Hillbillies. God save the Kinks!!

Percy

This is an interesting one. This is a soundtrack that The Kinks recorded for the film Percy. It never came out in the US and never really did much in the UK. I managed to find an original copy awhile back. This one, however, is a reissue from 2000. The album is more interesting than amazing. It features a number of pretty good songs and then some instrumentals. The standout song being the lead off track "God's Children." This is a great song and it's a shame that it isn't heard more. The instrumental version of "Lola" is also interesting to hear. Overall it's not The Kinks best work. But being released the same year as Muswell Hillbillies you know that it's still head and shoulders above what most bands were doing.

Yesterday and Today (Butcher)

Now the find of the day. The Beatles Butcher Cover. I have one of these framed and hanging on my wall that my uncle gave me for Christmas years back. It's my favorite Beatles item. I love it. This one I pulled out of the "Over $20" Beatles box that 2nd Avenue Records has behind the counter to prevent theft. The guy working immediately made sure to keep his eye on me and told me "You can buy that," as if there was some reason I couldn't. Anyway, the price tag on it didn't lead me to immediately reach for my wallet and i put it back in the box. After about 15 seconds of thought, I checked my cash situation and decided to try the old standby. "Would you take X amount of dollars cash?" One of the workers told me "no" while the other one told him that they should call the owner and ask. After deciding that calling was the way to go, they made the phone call and got the go ahead. I handed over my hard earned cash and headed out the door with glee and a girlfriend who could not understand why somebody would pay that much for a record (I was able to convince her later that I significantly underpaid for it). No need for a review of this one either. If you don't know The Beatles then you probably should be heading to a record store as we speak.

Welcome everyone to the first post on Stevie B's Vinyl Finds! I've been collecting vinyl for awhile now and decided that there are just so many great albums that nobody ever knows about. That's what is wonderful about collecting records. So, I decided that as I purchase great new albums, I'll make a post and tell you all about them. If it's not in print maybe I can even host some vinyl rips. Either way, It'll be great. So sit back, turn up the speakers and enjoy the static pop of classic vinyl.
